Stay the night in a train carriage

Macedon Ranges accommodation

Hedge Farm

We’ve found what may be the most unique, comfy and affordable accommodation in the Macedon Ranges, only an hour’s drive from Melbourne. It’s so good we almost want to just keep it to ourselves!

We’re talking legit, olden days, wooden train carriages converted into cozy cottages. Hedge Farm is where you want to be (hopefully not when we want to book it ourselves).

Hedge Farm bread

The bread was so good and sustaining that we didn’t even go out for dinner. It may also have to do with the fact that we had two lunches that day. Still, the bread is amazing, I’m telling ya!

The Vine

The Vine original

We chose ‘The Vine’ cottage specifically because of its one-of-a-kind lounge room, which has some neat original features like the break wheel and a still-working pot belly stove. Looking out the windows and imagining the train in transit was pretty surreal, especially when we heard a train whistle go off in the morning.

sunbaking alpaca

Set on 20 acres in Carlsruhe, Victoria, Hedge Farm has plenty of space to unwind. Rolling hills of green make a relaxing vista if you can keep your eyes off the sun-baking alpaca.

At $120 per night, you really can’t go wrong.

Helpful information about Hedge Farm

  1. The rate includes breakfast provisions. Note: one of the best homemade bread you’ll ever have, jam & butter, milk, muesli, orange juice and everything you need for a cuppa.
  2. Checkout is at 11am and you can wander around the property after that to meander in the gardens and visit the farm animals.
  3. There are three cottages available, each designed for two people. Two of the three are train carriages (The Vine & Wisteria).
  4. For the carriages, the toilet and shower facilities are in separate buildings but they’re not shared. Each cottage has a designated toilet and shower. I thought this was going to be a problem for me but the toilet was literally 33 steps from our door so it wasn’t an issue.
  5. If you want the usual comforts, book the ‘Hedges’ instead for $240/night. It’s a converted train station with its own kitchen and luxurious bathroom.

Lovely in winter, Hedge Farm is sure to have a different charm in spring and summer. We’ll have to return to find out!
